6 Tips and Tricks to Keep Yourself Busy as a Quaran-Teen

Updated: Jul 30, 2020

As a teen, it's easy to find yourself searching for something new to do, while also abiding by the rules of Quarantine. That's why this blog was solely made to help you overcome this growth of boredom and stress. In the age of technology many of us look to our: phones, computers, and laptops for answers. However, did you ever think to look in book? Or perhaps try to wipeout the competition in a family board game?

Such activities are the key to keeping your brain occupied and your stress levels down. As for myself, I've taken on the task of learning a new language. Since the start of my linguistic journey, my self-anxiety has ceased to linger. Instead, I've given my mom quite the rush with my persistent 'yapping'.

On Fridays my siblings and I enjoy watching a movie together. Being close with family and friends is important when you're alone. This bond can be quite the life-saver when it comes to boredom.

Here, I have listed 6 Tips and Tricks to Keeping yourself Occupied Over Quarantine:

Number 1: Baking

To be quite frank, baking can be such a relief to the mind (so long as you do it right). Mixing the ingredients, prepping the trays, and working the oven can be a real stress relief. The satisfaction of seeing and tasting the finished product is something everyone needs. Baking is great for keeping you on the move. The amount of attention and detail required is sure to keep yourself busy for a few hours at most. I myself find cookies to be a personal favorite. The simplicity and savory taste of a chocolate chip cookie is just the thing I need in brightening my day.

Number 2: Reading

Reading is not only calming, but brain exercise as well. On an ordinary quarantine day, I often find my nose in a novel. Reading has the ability to develop images in our minds and the mysterious voices of the characters within. When reading, set a goal for yourself. In the least, read 3 chapters a day. (Depending on the speed for which you read that may differ). Me personally, I like to dip my nose into a book and read a solid 5 chapters a day. By the time I'm done I will have spent an approximate hour to an hour and 30 minutes depending on the chapters lengths.

Number 3: Exercise

Now I know It's not just me when I say some of us have been slacking on our recommended 30 mins. a day. Exercise, especially for teens, is important for your health and your growth. Every day, (the time of day doesn't matter) you should be doing at least 5 full sets of stretches. I typically do: teacups (10sec), butterflies (20 sec), rolling shoulders (10 sec per side), Arm stretches (10 sec per side), finishing off with 20 jumping jacks. Make sure to drink lots of water, and eat high protein foods and make sure you're getting proper nutrition (Especially Oats). After your stretches try taking a walk around your local neighborhood or park. It never hurts to get a taste of fresh air.

Number 4: Movie Night

Now I know "Movie Night" may seem a little cliché, but hear me out. Though social distancing prevents us from seeing our friends, it doesn't hurt to hang with family, or a significant other in your home. Having a family movie night (or other activity) is the perfect way to enjoy relaxation. Learn something new about your parents that you never knew, or thrill in the drama of a classic horror film. When doing a movie night try watching something new, or a film that has become a part of family tradition. I would suggest great films such as: The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, or Schindler's List.

Number 5: Arts and Crafts

Nothing is more enjoyable than arts and crafts! I am a terrible painter myself, but I do try. Arts and Crafts allow you to push beyond what you thought you were capable of. For instance, try painting scenery, or explore your inner artist by creating something abstract. Art is anything you make it, there is no right or wrong way to do it (unless it is wrong).

Number 6: Learn a Language

If learning is a huge interest to you, try learning a language. I myself grew up in a multilingual family, and learned a lot from listening. Knowing a new language can open up a whole new world of adventures. It's even more fun when working together with a family member! An important tip for learning a language is by first understanding its grammar. When learning a language try keeping a notebook to fill with important information such as: conjugations, pronunciations, verb lists, and more.

I sincerely hope that my six activities, gave you some new ideas to keep you occupied. Remember that you are not alone, and stay safe!
